Certificate Lifecycle Management

As the web security ecosystem accelerates toward shorter TLS certificate lifespans—dropping to 200 days in 2026, with 100-day cycles approaching in 2027 and 47-day limits targeted for 2029—web hosting providers and resellers are under immense pressure to achieve "100% automated SSL lifecycle management."
However, when hosting platforms and MSPs attempt to build an automated pipeline, they frequently run into integration bottlenecks and operational confusion. The primary reason? Confusing Business Automation with Operational Lifecycle Automation.
To build a reliable, zero-touch certificate infrastructure that works seamlessly across billing platforms (like HostBill or WHMCS) and hosting control panels (like ISPmanager, cPanel, or Nginx), you must treat these as two distinct layers.
The Business Layer handles the commercial relationship between you, your clients, and your upstream CA provider. Its job is to ensure smooth order processing, multi-year subscription management, and revenue collection.
Client Ordering & Billing: Allowing end-users to select SSL products, pay via storefront, and receive automated invoices.
Order Provisioning: Automatically triggering API calls to your CA distributor (such as NicSRS) to submit CSRs and request certificate orders.
Multi-Year Subscriptions: Selling 2-year or 3-year security plans to clients while managing backend renewals automatically.
Business-layer automation relies on REST APIs and ready-to-use billing system modules (such as the NicSRS Module for HostBill or WHMCS Plugin).
The Limitation: While your billing module can automatically submit a renewal order to NicSRS when a client pays, it cannot log into your client’s Linux web server to install the new certificate file or reload the Nginx/Apache process. That requires the technical layer.
The Ops/Technical Layer handles the actual server-side execution. It connects the Certificate Authority directly to the endpoint infrastructure to eliminate human intervention during re-issuance and deployment.
Automated Domain Control Validation (DCV): Automatically creating DNS records (DNS-01) or HTTP tokens (HTTP-01) on the target host to satisfy CA validation checks without customer action.
Zero-Touch Issuance & Retrieval: Downloading the issued TLS certificate binary as soon as it is signed.
Server Deployment & Process Reload: Automatically placing .crt and .key files into control panels (like ISPmanager, cPanel) or web servers and reloading services without downtime.
Technical-layer automation relies on protocol-level protocols like ACME or specialized agent-based platforms like sslTrus CaaS (Certificate as a Service) and CLMBot.
For full automation of issuance, renewal, and deployment (including DCV and ISPmanager auto-deployment), we recommend our in-house developed products:
sslTrus CaaS & CLM:
sslTrus CaaS is ideal for starting with as few as 1 certificate, supporting automated DCV and ISPmanager deployment.
sslTrus CLM is designed for enterprises managing a large number of certificates.
Both support multi-year subscriptions and can automatically issue new certificates within shorter validity periods.
Note: The reseller API for sslTrus CaaS will be available soon. If you currently have clients requiring CLM, please feel free to contact us.
ACME SSL (Sectigo CaaS):
We also offer Sectigo CaaS for ACME-based automation (no reseller API available yet).
While standard ACME protocols offer basic issuance, sslTrus CaaS by NicSRS is designed to give hosters and resellers maximum flexibility:
Multi-Brand Flexibility: Unlike single-CA ACME solutions, sslTrus CaaS supports multi-brand SSL certificates (Sectigo, DigiCert, GeoTrust, sslTrus) within a unified management framework.
Lightweight Deployment (CLMBot): Uses a secure, lightweight agent (CLMBot) to execute automated DCV and server-side deployment across control panels like ISPmanager without requiring complex manual script maintenance.
Scalable CLM for Enterprise: From single-site CaaS to enterprise-grade sslTrus CLM managing thousands of endpoints, your security grows with your business.
Don't let short-cycle certificate mandates overwhelm your administrative team or confuse your clients. By separating your billing workflows from your server-side deployment, you can achieve complete, hassle-free digital trust automation.
